Fiji men’s sevens rugby forward Kavekini Tanivanuakula continues to be in contention for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament despite facing drink driving charges. This was confirmed by head coach Osea Kolinisau during a training session on Tuesday. Tanivanuakula is currently training with his teammates as they prepare for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s, taking place next week.

Tanivanuakula, who debuted for the national team at the Dubai leg of the series last month and also participated in the Cape Town tournament, was arrested at the Nadi Temple checkpoint on December 14. He is scheduled to appear in Nadi Magistrate’s Court on February 17, 2025.

Kolinisau addressed the situation, highlighting the crucial decision-making skills required from players, particularly newcomers like Tanivanuakula. He emphasized the responsibility that comes with representing Fiji, noting that Tanivanuakula is beginning to understand this important role. The head coach has observed positive behavioral changes in the player since the incident, stating that he is learning the significance of being a role model.

Kolinisau also reinforced the team’s commitment to kindness and respect, urging players to ensure their conduct reflects their status as role models for younger fans. The final squad for the Perth 7s will be announced following the conclusion of the Coral Coast 7s tournament, which runs from January 24-26.

This incident serves as a critical moment for Tanivanuakula, presenting an opportunity to learn and grow from his experience. His journey illustrates the potential for redemption, offering hope and inspiration to fellow athletes who may face similar challenges. It signifies not just a chance for Tanivanuakula to improve on the field, but to emerge as a responsible individual off it as well.
