Fiji men’s sevens forward Kavekini Tanivanuakula remains a strong contender for a spot in the upcoming Perth 7s, despite facing charges related to drink driving. Head coach Osea Kolinisau confirmed Tanivanuakula’s status during the team’s training session on Tuesday, noting that he joined his fellow players in preparation for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament scheduled for next week.
Tanivanuakula, who made his national debut at the Dubai 7s last month and was also part of the team at the Cape Town leg, was arrested on December 14 at a drink driving checkpoint in Nadi. He is set to appear before the Nadi Magistrate’s Court on February 17, 2025.
Kolinisau discussed the importance of decision-making with the young player, emphasizing that representing Fiji comes with significant responsibility. He expressed optimism about Tanivanuakula’s growth, stating that he has demonstrated a willingness to learn and adapt from his mistakes. Kolinisau highlighted the team’s aim to serve as role models, promoting values of kindness and respect both on and off the field.
Kolinisau plans to announce the final squad for the Perth 7s, which is scheduled to take place from January 24-26, following the completion of the Coral Coast 7s tournament.
This situation serves as an important reminder of the impact of athletes’ behavior off the field and the lessons that can be learned from challenges. Tanivanuakula has the potential to emerge from this experience as a stronger role model, demonstrating resilience and commitment to positive change.
