Kavekini Tanivanuakula, a forward for the Fiji men’s sevens rugby team, remains a strong contender for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament despite facing drink-driving charges. This was confirmed by head coach Osea Kolinisau during a training session where Tanivanuakula and his teammates were preparing for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, set to take place next week.

Tanivanuakula, who debuted on the national stage at the Dubai 7s last month and also played in the Cape Town leg of the series, was arrested on December 14 at the Nadi Temple checkpoint. He is scheduled to appear in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court on February 17, 2025.

Kolinisau emphasized the significance of decision-making for Tanivanuakula, particularly as a newcomer. He highlighted the responsibilities that come with representing Fiji, noting that Tanivanuakula has demonstrated a willingness to learn from this experience. “He has shown improvement and is beginning to understand his role as a representative of our nation,” Kolinisau said.

Additionally, the coach stressed the importance of players being role models for the younger generation. He called upon the team to showcase attributes such as kindness, respect, and accountability in all their interactions.

The final squad for the Perth 7s will be announced after the Coral Coast 7s, which runs from January 24-26.

This situation serves as a poignant reminder that setbacks can lead to powerful learning experiences. Tanivanuakula’s journey reflects the hope that challenges can foster personal growth, enabling athletes to emerge as more resilient and responsible individuals. With the right support and a focus on accountability, there is optimism for Tanivanuakula to turn this moment into an opportunity for inspiration and positive change.
