The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team is prioritizing improvements in their defensive strategies as they prepare for the upcoming Vancouver 7s tournament. Head coach Osea Kolinisau emphasized the need for enhancement, particularly in addressing weaknesses observed in their defense during a recent match in Perth.

Kolinisau reflected on the team’s performance, noting that while they made some progress, there remains significant work to be done. “We improved a bit, but there is still a lot more we can do in defense, especially when we’re working on our edges,” he stated. This aspect of their defense has proven vulnerable, as they allowed numerous tries from opponents exploiting gaps at the sidelines.

He highlighted the team’s communication issues as one of the main factors contributing to these defensive lapses. “We had men there, but our processes in executing defense were wrong,” Kolinisau added. The coach is focusing on refining these processes to ensure the team can better withstand future challenges.

Additionally, the team has been concentrating on improving their tackling skills to ensure solid one-on-one engagements in preparation for their next matches. “We missed a lot of tackles as well, but that’s something we want to make sure our one-on-one is solid; it will help us in our next leg,” Kolinisau mentioned.

In a demonstration of bolstering the squad, players Wame Ratuva and Tomasi Stark from the Yaro Chiefs have been included in the extended training squad after their impressive performances at the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s. Their excellent display has caught the attention of Kolinisau, who is looking to strengthen the national team ahead of the Vancouver 7s, set to take place from March 7-8. This proactive approach reflects the team’s commitment to growth and resilience, as they look to improve and make a strong impression in the upcoming tournament.
