FIJI Airways Fijian 7s Head Coach Osea Kolinisau is gearing up for the upcoming Dubai 7s, the first leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series, where they aim to defend their title. Kolinisau highlights the significance of starting strong, recognizing the tournament’s new format where only eight teams compete, and the top two will advance directly to the semi-finals.
The team will comprise 13 players, with an additional five participating in the Dubai invitational tournament. This strategy allows for flexibility in the event of injuries, enabling them to seamlessly make adjustments. As excitement builds, the team has expressed gratitude towards the rugby board and Qatar Airways for their efforts in ensuring an early arrival.
Kolinisau shared insights on adjusting their gameplay, particularly focusing on kick-off and offensive strategies. “Last year, while we won the ball, we struggled in maintaining possession during the rucks, and improving that aspect is a key focus for us this time,” he stated. The selection will also include standout players from the recent Skipper Cup, which adds depth and a mix of experience and emerging talent to the squad.
Fitness training has taken a front seat during the off-season, with a special emphasis on upper-body strength to meet the demanding nature of sevens rugby. With a determined approach and strategic preparation, Fiji aims to make a significant impact at the tournament.
The final squad announcement is anticipated, and the team is scheduled to depart for Dubai shortly. The passion and talent within the squad signify a promising future for Fijian rugby, and fans are hopeful for a successful showing as they embark on this new season.
