The Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team has achieved another impressive milestone by reaching the semifinals of the 2025/2026 HSBC Sevens World Series for the fourth consecutive time, following a hard-fought 20-14 victory over South Africa at the Perth Sevens. This win secures Fiji the top position in Pool A, setting the stage for their upcoming Cup semifinal match scheduled for 4:57 PM tomorrow.
Fiji’s recent performances have showcased their resilience, as they have come from behind to win all three of their matches in Perth. Notably, they clinched victory in Singapore the previous week with a dramatic golden point.
Rookie Nacani Boginisoko, who debuted in Singapore, delivered an outstanding performance with several significant line breaks, while teammate Vuiviawa Naduvalo contributed with two crucial tries. Despite a challenging start, with Zane Davids scoring for South Africa in the early minutes, Fiji’s determination shone through.
Douglas Daveta had a near-miss when he couldn’t collect a pass following a Boginisoko breakout and was later shown a red card for a deliberate knock-on, allowing South Africa to extend their lead. However, when South Africa was reduced to six players due to Davids receiving a yellow card, Fiji capitalized with Boginisoko sneaking in a try.
After trailing 5-14 at halftime, the Fijian side made a powerful comeback, inspired by Naduvalo, who scored shortly after the break. Boginisoko again played a pivotal role, assisting Naduvalo’s second try before Iowane Teba added another score, pushing Fiji ahead just moments after South Africa received another yellow card.
In their earlier matches, Fiji triumphed over Argentina with a 26-10 victory and narrowly beat Spain 26-24, further proving their prowess in the tournament. As Fiji prepares for the semifinals, the team’s robust form and fighting spirit provide a sense of optimism for their fans, highlighting their ongoing quest for success in the series.
