Fiji Airways’ hopes of advancing to the final of the Cape Town Sevens were extinguished following a thrilling semifinal clash against Argentina, which ended in a 29–21 defeat for the Fijian team. The match showcased a high level of intensity and fierce competition.
Argentina asserted their dominance early in the game, rapidly establishing a 17–0 lead within the first half. Key plays included tries from Santiago Mare, Santiago Alvarez, and Luciano Gonzalez, all of which were backed by successful conversions from Mare and Vera Feld. Their aggressive tactics and quick scoring left Fiji struggling to respond.
However, the Fijian squad rallied impressively in the second half. Viwa Naduvalo scored two tries back-to-back, and Manulii Maisamoa contributed another try shortly thereafter, bringing Fiji to within striking distance. Sakiusa Siqila converted two of the tries, injecting hope into the team and their supporters.
Despite Argentina temporarily going down to six players, Fiji was unable to leverage the advantage effectively during this sin-bin period. Handling errors proved detrimental, preventing Fiji from converting opportunities into points at crucial moments.
While the outcome was disappointing for Fiji, the second-half performance demonstrated their resilience and fighting spirit, suggesting potential for future tournaments. With continued development and refinement, the team remains a formidable presence in the world of rugby sevens.
