The Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s team is intensifying preparations for the upcoming HSBC SVNS Dubai 7s tournament, set to take place from November 29 to December 1. This event marks the opening leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series, and the team is determined to defend their title.
During a recent training session at Albert Park in Suva, the squad welcomed three new players into their ranks, showcasing the depth of talent as they gear up for the competition. Head coach Osea Kolinisau reported that preparations have been progressing positively, with a particular emphasis on improving upper body strength to address last season’s tackling issues. “We have been falling off a lot of tackles last season, and as you can see in our fitness, we really are pushing the boys,” Kolinisau remarked, highlighting the team’s commitment to elevate their performance.
Kolinisau recognizes the demanding nature of the series, noting that they will face tough competition from the world’s top eight teams with no quarter-finals to soften the blow of unfinished matches. “We need to focus on every game, and we are looking forward to the upcoming series,” he stated, setting a clear expectation for the team as they strive for excellence in each match.
To further hone their skills, the team will participate in a competition in New Zealand shortly before finalizing their roster for the Dubai tournament. Following this trip, they will train for a week before naming the squad that will represent Fiji in Dubai.
The men’s team is set to confront formidable opponents, including Spain, the United States, and New Zealand in their group matches. This challenging pool reflects the competitive landscape of the HSBC SVNS series, which emphasizes the importance of teamwork and strategy.
Former Fiji sevens player Vilimoni Delasau has shared insights into the team’s preparations, underscoring the need for unity and execution of fundamental skills. Delasau expressed confidence in the players’ growth, particularly noting improvements in fitness as observed during the Mataso sevens tournament. He emphasizes that all competing teams are at a high level, adding to the excitement and unpredictability of the matches ahead.
As anticipation builds within the Fiji rugby community, both the men’s and women’s teams are not only eager to showcase their skills but also to reignite national pride in the sport. With a blend of experienced athletes and emerging talent, the hope is that the Fiji teams will not only perform well but also bring back the passion that has historically defined Fijian rugby. This tournament is not just a chance for competition; it’s an opportunity to inspire future generations and uphold the rich heritage of Fiji’s sevens rugby.
