Fiji Men’s Sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has emphasized that the national team is currently navigating a significant transition period. As preparations ramp up for the next Olympic Games, the focus is on building squad depth and fostering long-term development.

Kolinisau highlighted the importance of the current season as a pivotal opportunity to rebuild the team and enhance competition across all positions. His strategy involves integrating several new talents into the squad, with the coaching staff prioritizing an expanded talent pool over relying on a fixed set of core players.

“You can see where there’s a lot of changes, new players coming in, and that’s something we want to build before the Olympic years come around. This is the time where transitioning is happening, and two years out from the Olympics we’re trying to build depth and make sure we have competition in every position,” Kolinisau said.

The coach reiterated that internal competition is crucial for maintaining high standards within the team. He expressed a desire to have multiple players contending for the same roles, ensuring that strong performances in training will be acknowledged and rewarded, regardless of a player’s level of experience.

“We would like to have four people competing for one position, and that’s the depth we want. New faces will be brought in, and if they’re good enough and showing it in training, I’m not scared to give them the chance to debut for Fiji,” he stated.

As the Fiji Men’s Sevens team gears up for the upcoming Singapore 7s next weekend, which will be broadcast live on FBC Sports, the atmosphere is filled with anticipation and optimism about the future. Kolinisau’s commitment to fostering new talent while maintaining competitive spirit signals a hopeful path forward as the team aims for success on the world stage.
