Fiji Airways men’s sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has expressed his admiration for the team’s mental resilience during recent training sessions. As they prepare for the Perth 7s tournament scheduled for January 24-26, Kolinisau is focused on enhancing the team’s defensive strategies and spatial awareness, particularly under fatigue.
The squad came together for their first training session after the holiday break, where Kolinisau noted the impressive mental strength of his players. He emphasized the challenge of completing intense fitness drills, which included rigorous two-minute intervals. “I told the players that we want to be playing at the intensity of the series and that’s something I’m really proud with today. The players not giving up and giving me that intensity,” he remarked.
Looking ahead, Kolinisau has already named a team for the upcoming McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast sevens. He also mentioned that eight squad members will join Mike Friday’s Select sevens team. The final team roster for Perth will be determined after the three-day tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Kolinisau highlighted the importance of improving defensive tactics, especially in the final moments of games, and emphasized the need for enhanced communication and decision-making on the field. He stated that every position on the team is competitive as they gear up for Perth.
“Our goal for Perth is to win, and the players are aware that our aim for the season is to secure the series, which is a part of our long-term development,” he said, recognizing the journey ahead in a four-year cycle.
Additionally, Kolinisau expressed gratitude to the organizers of the Coral Coast 7s tournament for honoring him in their walk of fame and hopes to inspire young Fijian boys to follow in his footsteps.
This dedication to improvement and mentorship not only bolsters the team’s preparation for the challenges ahead but also highlights the culture of resilience and aspiration that pervades Fijian rugby. With strong leadership and a focus on collective growth, the Fiji men’s sevens team appears well-prepared to make a significant impact in upcoming competitions.
