Fiji Airways men’s sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau recently commended his team’s mental resilience during training sessions. The squad has regrouped for the first time after the Christmas and New Year break, as they prepare for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament scheduled for January 24-26.

Kolinisau emphasized the importance of enhancing the team’s defensive strategies and spacing even under fatigue. He mentioned, “I’m looking at the player’s fitness going to Perth as we want to build on where we are at right now in the series.” The coach praised the players’ mental strength, noting their determination to push through the final rigorous fitness drills despite the demanding training.

The team is set to participate in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast sevens event next week, and Kolinisau has indicated that he will select the lineup for the Perth 7s after observing the players’ performances in this three-day tournament at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. He reiterated a key focus on improving defensive capabilities, particularly during crucial moments of the game, to minimize opportunities for opponents.

Encouraging open communication and solid decision-making on the field, Kolinisau suggested that every position within the team is competitive, creating an environment of motivation for the players. “The goal for Perth is to win it and the players know the goal for the season is to try and win the series,” he remarked, noting the sizable journey ahead as part of a four-year plan.

Reflecting on his own career, Kolinisau expressed gratitude for the recognition he has received, including being honored in the Coral Coast 7s tournament walk of fame. He voiced a strong hope that his journey would serve as inspiration for young Fijian athletes aiming to make their mark in the sport.

Ultimately, Kolinisau’s commitment to fostering resilience, skill improvement, and open communication among players bodes well for Fiji’s future in rugby sevens, instilling both a competitive spirit and camaraderie in the team.

This follow-up period before the tournament showcases not only their physical preparation but a strengthening of mental capability, which is crucial for thriving in high-stakes sports environments. The journey ahead looks promising as the team aims to build on their performance and strive for success in the upcoming series.
