Fiji’s men’s sevens head coach Osea Kolinisau has acknowledged that the team has concluded the 2024/25 HSBC SVNS Series in second place, primarily due to inconsistent performances throughout the season. With Argentina at the top of the standings with 104 points, Fiji managed to secure 96 points, while Spain followed with 88 points.
Kolinisau, reflecting on the season, remarked on their near misses, highlighting that the team lost in the semifinals during crucial moments, including matches against South Africa and France. “We could have finished first but we were inconsistent,” he stated, pointing out that they lost semifinals in the final seconds, which were pivotal moments in their campaign.
Despite the setbacks, Kolinisau expressed gratitude to the players for their continual efforts to learn and grow from their experiences. The coaching staff and players are now focusing on identifying strengths and areas requiring improvement as they prepare for the next HSBC Los Angeles Sevens Championship scheduled for May 3-4.
Kolinisau emphasized the importance of finding balance in their attack and defense to achieve the consistency that has eluded them in critical matches this season. He noted, “We’re learning… We just want to find that consistency and maintain it.” This period of preparation before Los Angeles will help the team refine its approach, ensuring they build on what they have learned.
Adding to the optimism, the Fiji men’s team has shown glimpses of excellence this season, winning tournaments in Dubai and Singapore. Their recent performances indicate a growing potential, and Kolinisau urged fans to continue supporting the team in their journey to reclaim their place among the top sevens teams in the world.
In summary, the season has been one of learning and resilience for Fiji’s rugby sevens team. With targeted preparation and a commitment to improving their consistency, there is hope that they can achieve greater success in the upcoming tournaments. The dedication shown by Kolinisau and his players inspires belief among fans that they are on the right path to excellence.
