Fiji is poised to improve its maritime safety and align with international obligations through the introduction of the Maritime Transport (Budget Amendment) Bill 2025. This legislation, which amends the existing Maritime Transport Act of 2013, was presented in Parliament recently and aims to bring Fiji’s maritime regulations in line with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

A crucial aspect of the new Bill is the mandatory implementation of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) on all vessels operating within Fijian waters. This cutting-edge real-time ship tracking technology is designed to enhance safety, security, and environmental protection by providing continuous monitoring of ships. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) will gain expanded powers to enforce compliance with AIS regulations, ensuring that all vessels adhere to established global safety norms.

The Bill calls for AIS installation on all ships, which will significantly decrease risks and enhance emergency response capabilities by enabling vessels to be trackable at all times. The enhanced regulatory authority of MSAF marks a substantial advancement for the maritime sector in Fiji, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving maritime safety standards.

This initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime legislation, as highlighted in previous discussions regarding the need for comprehensive reviews of related laws. By fostering robust regulatory frameworks, these amendments contribute to the operational efficiency of MSAF, and ultimately benefit the economy and citizens reliant on a safer maritime transport system.

As Fiji embarks on these legislative changes, the future of its maritime sector appears promising. Through investment in safety and compliance, the nation is well-positioned to enhance its maritime operations, instilling greater confidence among the public regarding the safety and reliability of maritime services.
