Fiji is ramping up efforts to establish itself as a leading digital outsourcing hub in the Pacific. The Fijian government recently announced significant plans for a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) infrastructure project aimed at enhancing industry collaboration.
At a meeting with Joseva Wivou, Executive Director of Outsource Fiji, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica outlined the strategic vision for the country’s burgeoning BPO sector. Highlighting plans for a new BPO Hub at the Kalabu Tax Free Zone, he described the development as a “BPO village” intended to serve as a one-stop digital center equipped with high-speed connectivity and essential lifestyle amenities.
This meeting also reviewed the progress made since the recent Annual General Meeting of the BPO Council, which saw a leadership change and renewed initiatives to unify and expand membership within the sector. Currently, there are about eight active BPO operators in Fiji, but industry leaders are ambitious in their goal to more than double that number in the near future.
DPM Kamikamica reiterated the government’s commitment to the BPO industry, emphasizing its critical role in fulfilling Fiji’s National Digital Strategy and generating meaningful employment opportunities for the youth. The government’s ongoing support, marked by funding to enhance industry capabilities, is seen as pivotal for sustainable growth.
Fiji’s recent advancements in this sector are further bolstered by a strong, English-speaking, and youthful population, combined with positive developments like increasing connectivity options such as the forthcoming Google link, which will improve digital access and empower local women who make up about 70% of the outsourcing workforce.
The outlook for Fiji’s outsourcing industry appears bright, signaling a future filled with potential for local job creation and economic diversification. With industry leaders focusing on upskilling the workforce and establishing strategic partnerships, Fiji is positioning itself as a premier destination for BPO services in the Pacific region. The commitment to enhanced connectivity and industry collaboration can foster resilience and sustainable economic development, creating a hopeful trajectory for the nation’s future.
