Fiji Sets Diwali Fireworks Rules: 5 PM–Midnight Window, 18+ Purchases, Safety First

Fijians will have the opportunity to use fireworks during Diwali celebrations, with designated times set from 5 PM to midnight on Diwali Day, which falls on Tuesday, November 5, and between 5 PM and 10 PM on other days. The Mineral Resources Department has issued these guidelines to ensure public safety during the festivities.

The department warns that violations of the fireworks regulations could lead to heavy penalties, including fines of up to $400 or imprisonment for up to six months. Fireworks are classified under the United Nations Hazard Classification System as powerful pyrotechnic products, specifically Class 1.3 and 1.4 explosives. Class 1.3 fireworks are reserved for public displays conducted by certified operators, while some Class 1.4 fireworks are consumer-grade and can be sold for private use.

In addition to these regulations, the department encourages Fijians to respect the Hindu community’s prayers, which take place from 6 PM to 7 PM on Diwali Day. The ministry aims for a festive season free from fireworks-related incidents, stressing the importance of safety and responsible usage.

This year’s guidelines build upon previous announcements from the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, which highlighted the necessity of adult supervision, particularly for children handling fireworks. Homemade firework devices, such as bamboo guns, remain illegal, and only individuals aged 18 and older are permitted to purchase commercial fireworks.

As the Diwali season approaches, the ministry emphasizes the collective effort needed to celebrate safely, ensuring that the joy of the festival can be enjoyed by all while minimizing risks associated with fireworks.
