The third Fiji Tourism Convention has established significant resolutions aimed at fostering the sector’s next phase of growth. Both government officials and industry leaders emphasize the need for enhanced coordination, improved data utilization, and a focus on inclusive development within the tourism sector.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, asserted the commitment of the Ministry to provide consistent and timely tourism data. This initiative is aimed at facilitating well-informed decision-making processes across the tourism industry and in local communities.
Gavoka announced that future conventions will involve stakeholders from various sectors, including infrastructure, regulatory bodies, and financial institutions, to tackle essential issues such as access to digital platforms and e-commerce opportunities. He stressed that development should be steered by local communities, reflecting cultural values and respecting local custodianship.
The Minister noted that the forum is intended to serve as a practical working platform, rather than just a ceremonial gathering. He expressed that while the tourism sector possesses a visionary outlook, it necessitates concrete implementation to realize these aspirations.
Gavoka highlighted that the resolutions adopted are commitments that require accountability and cooperation from all involved stakeholders. Furthermore, he indicated that discussions will continue regarding the draft Civil Aviation Bill 2026 and the draft Commercial Use of Marine Areas Bill 2025.
Additionally, the convention aims to explore strategies to draw in transit passengers as stopover visitors, which includes a review of the departure tax, all while ensuring the sustainability of fiscal measures. This proactive approach reflects a broader vision for tourism in Fiji, ensuring that growth is inclusive and community-focused.
