The Ministry of Trade, Co-Operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications in Fiji is embarking on a significant new initiative aimed at shaping the nation’s economic landscape over the next 30 years. This was announced during a recent workshop attended by senior officials from various government ministries, marking the start of consultations for a new strategic plan.
Permanent Secretary for Trade Shaheen Ali highlighted the achievements of the previous strategic plan covering 2018-2023, which witnessed notable progress in areas such as trade, investment, and support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The ministry aims to build on this foundation and has set ambitious goals aligned with Fiji’s Vision 2050 and the 2025-2029 National Development Plan.
Ali emphasized the need for economic diversification, stating, “We must build a new economic model—one that is diversified, digitally enabled, sustainable, and inclusive.” The ministry is targeting a sustainable growth trajectory of five percent, with investments in high-value, technology-driven sectors. This approach is intended to reduce reliance on traditional industries, create jobs, and tackle issues related to brain drain.
The strategic plan will focus on enhancing digital government services while also addressing broader economic challenges, such as affordable housing and utility resilience, aiming to establish a more prosperous, resilient, and innovative Fiji. It is built on five core pillars that seek to ensure inclusive growth and improved quality of life for all citizens.
This proactive step reflects the ministry’s commitment to fostering a vibrant economic landscape through collaboration amongst all sectors, emphasizing the importance of innovation and inclusivity. As Fiji transitions towards a more diversified economy, this strategic endeavor promises a hopeful outlook for the nation’s future, positioning it for collective success and sustainable development.
