The revised Employment Relations Bill is expected to be introduced in Fiji’s Parliament in August 2025, as announced by Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations, at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Singh highlighted that the bill has been in development for the past two years and represents a significant step forward in enhancing labor laws in Fiji.
He affirmed that Fiji has made notable progress in updating its Employment Relations Act of 2007, addressing labor rights through comprehensive dialogues and consultations. Currently, the revised bill is receiving a legal review from the Office of the Solicitor General to ensure it complies with international standards.
This initiative aims not only to bolster worker protections but also to facilitate fair employment practices and establish a constructive work environment. Singh emphasized that the revised act is indicative of the government’s dedication to timely reforms that serve the interests of both employees and employers.
This legislative effort aligns with previous discussions and consultations involving various stakeholders, including the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF), which have contributed insights toward modernizing labor laws to better suit the current economic and social landscape influenced by changing work dynamics.
With continued engagement and support from stakeholders, there is a hopeful perspective that these reforms will lead to a balanced legislative framework that promotes both economic growth and enhanced workplace relations in Fiji. The expectation is that the forthcoming Employment Relations Bill will usher in a new era of labor laws that encourage a thriving work environment while safeguarding the rights of all workers.
