Fiji is embarking on a significant transformation in its maritime sector, as Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka unveiled the concept design for a cutting-edge shipbuilding and repair facility in conjunction with Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald. The report asserting Lautoka as the prime location for this facility emphasizes the region’s strong demand, available skills, and distinct customer needs. This endeavor, which comes in partnership with Arup Australia and the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, aims to revive Fiji’s shipbuilding industry and restore its stature in the global maritime landscape.

High Commissioner McDonald highlighted that this venture extends beyond mere infrastructure development; it presents a valuable opportunity for skills enhancement and job creation, with an anticipated requirement for 100-120 staff during peak demand periods. Ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Education are expected to focus on vocational training initiatives aimed at equipping locals with the necessary skill set for various roles within this increasingly vital sector.

The report, which constitutes Stage 1 of the initiative, reveals a robust demand for ship repairs and maintenance in Fiji and the wider Pacific region, with current shipyard operations nearly at full capacity. This forthcoming facility is expected to significantly bolster Fiji’s maritime capabilities, not only addressing the immediate demands but also paving the way for future growth in the industry.

Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing the maritime sector through the establishment of Oceania Shipbuilding and Engineering Limited. The construction will be carried out in phases, with the initial development commencing soon and an expansion planned for the neighboring Public Works Department site.

The study’s next phase is expected to confirm the facility’s design and feasibility and secure a $1.7 million investment from Australia for the study and site preparation, underlining the depth of the partnership between the two nations.

This announcement follows other significant initiatives aimed at enhancing Fiji’s maritime capabilities and infrastructure, reinforcing the strategic collaboration between Fiji and Australia in bolstering the regional maritime sector. The future looks promising, offering the potential for job creation and economic growth while ensuring that Fiji remains an integral player in the maritime industry across the Pacific.
