The Fiji Government has announced it will host the Pacific Technical Cooperation Session of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in Suva in April 2025. This marks a significant moment as it will be the first time a CEDAW Committee Session is held outside of Geneva, highlighting the Pacific region’s commitment to promoting women’s rights and gender equality.

Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Lynda Tabuya, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing its importance not only for Fiji but for the entire Pacific Islands and beyond. She stated, “This technical cooperation session signifies a monumental step forward, showcasing the UN’s commitment to realizing human rights through a people-centered approach.”

The invitation for Fiji to host the session was accepted following discussions during the Pacific Islands Forum Women Leaders Meeting in 2023. Minister Tabuya acknowledged the contributions of various organizations, including the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and the Pacific Community (SPC), for their advocacy efforts.

As preparations for the event begin, the Fiji Government reaffirms its dedication to CEDAW principles and the advancement of women and girls’ rights in the region. Minister Tabuya highlighted that this session will provide a platform to address the progress and challenges faced in achieving gender equality while reinforcing the government’s commitment to human rights for all.

Ana Pelaez Narvaez, chairperson of the CEDAW Committee, called this event a historic occasion that offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the Pacific region on gender equality issues. She stressed the need to engage with local leaders and stakeholders to ensure every woman and girl can live free from discrimination.

The Pacific Technical Cooperation CEDAW session is set to foster extensive participation, bringing together government representatives, civil society organizations, and community members to collaborate on achieving gender equality. The Committee intends to review the implementation of CEDAW in three Pacific countries and share concluding observations in June during its 91st Session.

In the upcoming months, more information will be released regarding public participation and ways for stakeholders to get involved in this vital session.

This event represents not just a local milestone for Fiji but a significant beacon of hope for progress in women’s rights and gender equality on a global scale. As nations come together to share experiences and challenges, it reflects a united commitment towards enhancing the rights of women and girls everywhere.
