Fiji is set to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup EAP Qualifier from September, marking a significant moment for regional cricket. Suva will welcome seven participating nations: Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan, Samoa, Cook Islands, and the Philippines. This tournament is anticipated to be the largest ICC Qualifier ever held in the East Asia-Pacific region, with teams divided into two groups of four.
Fiji’s team will compete in a pool alongside Indonesia, Cook Islands, and Vanuatu. Cricket Fiji’s Chief Executive, Sitiveni Rokoro, expressed excitement about hosting their first ICC Women’s pathway event and extended a warm welcome to all teams, especially acknowledging the Philippines women’s team as they make their debut in this prestigious competition.
Rokoro further highlighted the importance of this tournament, noting that the winning team will secure a spot in the Women’s World Cup scheduled for 2026. This opportunity not only boosts the profile of women’s cricket in Fiji but also reinforces the nation’s commitment to fostering cricket at various levels.
Following the women’s tournament, attention will shift to Oman, where the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia & East Asia-Pacific Qualifier will commence on October 8.
The enthusiasm around these events is a clear indication of the growing momentum for women’s cricket in Fiji, as the sport continues to gain recognition and investment, paving the way for future advancements and achievements. With ongoing support and participation, the future of cricket in Fiji looks promising, especially for female athletes seeking to shine on the international stage.
