Fiji is poised to become the official host for regional policing centres of excellence as part of the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres will focus on providing training, support, research, best practices, and leadership in various policing areas.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement during his keynote speech at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event held last week in Sagafili Village, Samoa. He expressed his satisfaction that Fiji is prepared to take on the responsibility of hosting one of these centres, highlighting the country’s necessary facilities and infrastructure to support this regional initiative.
The PPI aims to harmonize policing efforts across the Pacific, organized around three main pillars: Regional Centres of Excellence, a Deployable Pacific Policing Support Group, and a Coordination Hub in Brisbane. Rabuka noted that there is an opportunity to enhance Australian support for the Black Rock training facility located in Nadi, which serves not only military purposes but also functions as a police and disaster relief centre.
