Cricket Fiji is set to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier, a landmark event that will feature the participation of eight nations including the Cook Islands, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, newcomers Philippines, Samoa, and Vanuatu. This tournament will mark the largest ICC qualifier ever held in the East Asia Pacific region.
Sitiveni Rokoro, the CEO of Cricket Fiji, expressed his pride in hosting this inaugural ICC pathway event in Suva, highlighting the significance it represents for the growth of women’s cricket in the region. “The inclusion of the Philippines team is particularly exciting as they make their debut, showcasing the increasing inclusivity and regional collaboration in women’s cricket,” said Rokoro. He also noted that the event serves as a stepping stone towards fulfilling the ICC requirements for South Korea to field a team in future qualifiers.
To prepare for the tournament, Cricket Fiji has expanded its training squad following the Super 4 tournament held in May, with players participating in weekly training sessions. The final team selection is expected to take place in early August, aiming to integrate a few overseas-based players for this pivotal competition.
The primary goal for the Fijian team is to clinch the tournament victory and secure a place in the subsequent Global Qualifier. PNG and Indonesia are currently the top-ranked teams, but Vanuatu, the defending champions after their win over PNG in the 2023 qualifier, will be eager to defend their title. The tournament is scheduled to take place from September 9-15.
Previous similar events highlighted the growing momentum for women’s cricket in Fiji. The upcoming qualification not only presents a platform to showcase talent but also enhances the profile of women’s cricket in the region, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to developing the sport across all levels. With increasing recognition and investment in women’s sports, the outlook for cricket in Fiji, particularly for female athletes, appears bright and filled with potential for future achievements.
