The Fiji Darts Association is preparing for the South Pacific Darts Championship, which will take place in Suva from January 20-26. This event marks Fiji’s second foray into international darts, with the first occurring in the 1990s during a tri-nation competition involving New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
According to President Edward Roxburgh, the championship promises to be highly competitive, particularly with the participation of experienced players from other nations. The defending champions, the Cook Islands, are anticipated to field a strong team, as many of their players compete professionally in New Zealand.
Roxburgh expressed respect for the skills of the opposing teams, noting that some players from the Cook Islands possess the talent to compete on the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) world stage. Despite the challenges ahead, he remains hopeful about Fiji’s performance. He acknowledged the uphill battle but emphasized that this tournament is an opportunity for Fiji to gain valuable international experience.
The championship has also garnered support from leading New Zealand darts brand Short Darts and the Metro Gym in Suva, indicating a collaborative effort to promote the sport in Fiji.
This event not only highlights Fiji’s growing involvement in international darts but also emphasizes the nation’s commitment to fostering sports and building competitive relationships across the region. With optimism in the air, fans and players alike are eager to see how Fiji will measure up in this prestigious tournament.
