Taekwondo Fiji is gearing up to host three significant tournaments in the upcoming year, aimed at promoting consistency and dedication among young athletes in the sport. National coach Neelu Nand emphasizes that participation in these events will be essential for athletes to demonstrate their abilities and secure a position on the national team.
The tournaments are tentatively scheduled to take place during the first term school holiday, mid-year, and again in December. Nand has reached out to major clubs for the opportunity to host these competitions, with clubs such as Civic Taekwondo, Nakasi, and Suva likely candidates for the hosting duties.
Currently, there are approximately nine clubs registered with Fiji Taekwondo, including Civic, Suva, Master Ra, Nakasi, Nausori, Sawani, Ba, and Nadi. Nand highlighted the successful involvement of around 150 young athletes in previous events, and aims to expand participation to around 200 athletes in the upcoming tournaments.
This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to fostering talent in Taekwondo at the grassroots level, providing young athletes with valuable competitive experience and opportunities for growth. The focus on youth participation not only enriches the sport but also contributes to community engagement and physical fitness among the younger population, laying a positive foundation for the future of Taekwondo in Fiji.
