Fijian military personnel will be dispatched to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in rehabilitation efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck the region earlier this week. A contingent from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, along with police, will form part of the deployment team.

This initiative reflects Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu in its recovery process. He has been in communication with Vanuatu Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, conveying Fiji’s readiness to extend assistance during this challenging time. Rabuka expressed his sorrow over the devastation caused by the earthquakes, which have claimed at least 14 lives.

In addition to direct support, Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to coordinate logistical assistance, although challenges have emerged, such as damage to the local airport runway. The current plan involves entering through Santo, Vanuatu, and then proceeding by boat to reach the most affected areas.

The earthquakes have inflicted severe damage on critical infrastructure, impacting hospitals, roads, buildings, two major water reservoirs, and gas lines. Moreover, a significant landslide has obstructed the seaport, further complicating the transport of essential supplies and personnel.

While the devastation is immense and recovery will take time, the proactive response from Fiji and collaboration with neighboring countries instills a sense of hope for the people of Vanuatu. Continued efforts and support from the international community will be vital in helping Vanuatu rebuild and recover from this tragedy.

Stay tuned for updates on this evolving situation.
