A new mission is underway as eighty-two soldiers from Fiji have departed for a tour of duty in Iraq under the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq. Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, the Commander of the Joint Taskforce Command (JTFC), bid farewell to the officers, emphasizing their important role as ambassadors of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and urging them to perform their duties with diligence and high standards.

The contingent will be led by Lieutenant Colonel Timoci Naivalu. This deployment continues a longstanding tradition, as Fiji has been contributing troops to Iraq for over 21 years, demonstrating its commitment to international peacekeeping efforts.

In similar context, Fiji’s Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, has reassured the safety of Fijian soldiers currently deployed in various peacekeeping missions amid rising tensions in the Middle East. He highlighted the preparedness of soldiers serving with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), emphasizing that they maintain strict operational procedures and are equipped with contingency plans for any potential evacuations.

Ongoing discussions with the United Arab Emirates further exemplify Fiji’s proactive approach to enhancing its military readiness and commitment to global peacekeeping initiatives. A government delegation is also expected to visit the Middle East early next year to assess conditions on the ground, evaluate reinforcement strategies, and express gratitude for the support received by Fijian peacekeepers.

This current deployment of Fijian soldiers to Iraq is not just a continuation of a historic involvement but also reinforces the government’s dedication to ensuring the safety of its military personnel while contributing to international stability. The reassuring oversight from defense officials showcases Fiji’s commitment to soldier welfare as they embark on this mission.

Overall, the deployment holds a hopeful promise for continued peacekeeping effectiveness, reflecting Fiji’s enduring support for global peace and security efforts.
