Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will dispatch a team to Vanuatu to aid in recovery efforts following a devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the nation on Tuesday.
In his remarks, Mr. Rabuka indicated that there are also plans to repatriate any Fijians currently residing in Vanuatu, should the situation require it. To ensure readiness, a Fiji Airways aircraft has been placed on standby for potential evacuations.
The RFMF team is expected to stay in Vanuatu throughout the Christmas season, providing continuous support for ongoing relief efforts. The earthquake has tragically resulted in the loss of 14 lives, injured approximately 200 individuals, and caused extensive damage, including the collapse of homes, landslides that have obstructed roads, and damaged vehicles.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that this deployment reflects Fiji’s steadfast commitment to stand in solidarity with its neighboring nations during crises, demonstrating the country’s dedication to assisting Vanuatu in its recovery process.
This response from the Fijian government highlights the importance of regional cooperation during emergencies and the willingness to help others in dire situations. It serves as a reminder of the strength of community and shared resilience.
Moreover, while Vanuatu faces significant challenges, the concerted efforts of neighboring countries like Fiji may foster hope for a quicker recovery and rebuilding process in the affected communities.
