Four foreign nationals along with two local men from Veisaru in Ba have been charged following a significant drug raid that led to the seizure of 2,630 parcels of cocaine. This operation was conducted on January 15, 2026, in the waters off Vatia, marking a considerable success for law enforcement.
The police report indicates that the four Ecuadorian nationals are facing multiple charges, including unlawful importation and possession of illicit drugs, as well as unlawful entry into Fiji. In addition, a 26-year-old man from Veisaru has been charged with unlawful importation of illicit drugs, two counts of unlawful possession, and serious assault. Another local man, aged 39, is facing charges of unlawful possession of illicit drugs and serious assault.
This successful operation was the result of extensive intelligence gathering conducted by the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department of the Fiji Police Force, in collaboration with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. On the night of the raid, authorities intercepted a vehicle that was allegedly transporting bags of illicit substances and later apprehended the four foreign nationals on a boat near the Vatia wharf.
Forensic analysis has confirmed that the drugs seized were cocaine, totaling 2.64 tonnes, with a staggering estimated street value of 780 million Australian dollars.
All six individuals charged will appear in the Tavua Magistrates Court on Thursday, January 22, 2026. The police have indicated that their investigations are ongoing and that additional suspects may still be in custody.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and real-time intelligence sharing, stating that these practices are crucial in dismantling transnational drug networks. This collaborative effort showcases a commitment to enhancing security and public safety in the region, illustrating a hopeful stance in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
