The Fiji Police Force has recently reported a significant drug bust that took place on January 15, 2026, in Vatia, where authorities seized an impressive 2.64 tonnes of cocaine valued at over $1.1 billion. This operation followed months of intelligence work initiated by the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department (SOCID) in July 2025, which indicated a major drug shipment moving from South America to the Pacific.

In December 2025, authorities monitored the movement of the illicit cargo, which was identified as being transported on a semi-submersible vessel, with Fiji being either a transit point or a final destination. On the night of the bust, officers from multiple departments, including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and SOCID, coordinated an operation that led to the interception of a vehicle believed to be carrying bags of illegal drugs in Vatia. Concurrently, a separate team conducted a raid on a vessel at the Vatia wharf, resulting in the apprehension of four Ecuadorian nationals and the seizure of additional drug-filled sacks.

Subsequent forensic analysis confirmed that the recovered 2,630 parcels contained cocaine, substantiating the enormity of the operation with a total weight of 2.64 tonnes. This seizure is among the largest drug interceptions in Fiji’s history and sheds light on the escalating threat posed by international drug trafficking syndicates that increasingly view the Pacific region as a conduit for their activities.

Fiji’s police authorities continue to investigate the incident, working diligently to uncover and dismantle the broader criminal network responsible for this considerable drug shipment. The successful operation reflects proactive law enforcement efforts and international cooperation in combating organized crime, providing a hopeful outlook towards enhancing the safety and security of the Pacific community.
