Fiji welcomed a significant influx of tourists last month, with 83,840 visitors arriving in December 2024, as reported by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS). This marks an impressive 9.1% increase from November 2024, which saw 76,845 arrivals. Overall, Fiji’s annual visitor total for 2024 stands at 982,938.
A closer look at the December data reveals that the majority of visitors, 83,021, traveled by air, while 819 arrived by sea. The latter group primarily comprised seamen from fishing vessels, numbering 806, alongside 13 yacht arrivals.
The motivations for visiting Fiji were predominantly holiday-related, with 78.2% of total arrivals indicating vacation as their purpose. Additionally, 8.9% traveled to visit friends or relatives, 1.2% for business, and 11.7% for other reasons. Demographic insights show that most visitors fell within the 25-64 age range, accounting for 61% of arrivals. Children aged 14 and under represented 17.4%, while youths aged 15-24 comprised 13.9%. Seniors aged 65 and over accounted for the remaining 7.7%.
This positive trend in tourist arrivals is reflective of a broader recovery in Fiji’s tourism sector, which is gradually approaching pre-pandemic levels. Just a few months prior, in September 2024, Fiji recorded its highest-ever visitor arrivals at 92,591, which was a 2.4% increase from September 2023 and exceeded numbers from 2019.
Australia continues to be the largest source market for tourists to Fiji, reaffirming its significance in the country’s tourism landscape.
In summary, the surge in December tourist arrivals in Fiji signals a promising recovery in the tourism sector, positioning Fiji as a favored destination as travelers seek sun, relaxation, and cultural experiences. As tourism numbers trend upward, the hope is that this momentum will continue into the new year, bringing both economic benefits and renewed vitality to local communities.
