Fiji Sees Seasonal Flu Surge as Health Agencies Step Up Surveillance

The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Fiji has recently announced a notable uptick in influenza-like illnesses (ILI) across all four divisions of the country. This increase aligns with the typical seasonal pattern of influenza, which generally occurs during the cooler and wetter months. According to data collected from the Fiji Centre for Disease Control through the Early Warning Alert and Response Surveillance, there has been a steady rise in reports of ILI and acute respiratory infections over the past three weeks.

Laboratory tests conducted at the National Public Health Laboratory have confirmed that Influenza A (H3 subtype) is the predominant strain circulating in the population. While this seasonal increase in respiratory illnesses is expected, the Ministry has observed that similar trends are occurring in other countries within the Western Pacific Region. At this stage, there is no indication of abnormal severity of illness or excessive hospitalizations beyond what would typically be seen with the rising number of cases.

The MoH stated that the majority of reported cases are being managed in outpatient settings, although there has been a gradual increase in hospital admissions. The current influenza trend in Fiji mirrors global seasonal patterns, as noted by the World Health Organization, which has identified Influenza A (H3N2) as the dominant circulating subtype in the region.

In response to this rise in cases, the Ministry has enhanced its surveillance and laboratory testing efforts through the Fiji CDC and the National Public Health Laboratory to monitor circulating influenza strains. All Divisional and Sub-divisional Health Teams have been alerted to track trends in acute respiratory infections and influenza-like illnesses while reinforcing infection prevention measures in health facilities.

To further support public health efforts, influenza awareness materials developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization have been distributed to schools, workplaces, and health centers. The Ministry has also activated the Risk Communication and Community Engagement network, encouraging early care-seeking behaviors among the public and promoting home-based preventive practices.

The proactive measures being implemented by Fiji’s health authorities demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding community health during this influenza season. With continued public vigilance and adherence to hygiene practices, there is hope for effective management of the rising influenza cases and overall improvement in health outcomes across Fiji.
