Fiji Sees Double-Digit Crime Decline as Sasamaki Operation Expands

Overall crime rates in Fiji have seen a significant decline of 18 percent in the first quarter, with the Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu announcing that 4,049 cases were reported from August to October this year compared to 4,960 during the same period last year. This trend of decreasing crime is consistent across all five policing divisions, although the Northern Division experienced a slight uptick of 3 percent.

Tudravu highlighted that serious crimes reported a remarkable decrease of 35 percent. The statistics reflect effective strategies employed by the police, including targeted operations and increased monitoring by divisional teams. In particular, drug-related offences dropped by 30 percent, with police recording a total of 334 drug cases. Within these, 299 pertained to unlawful possession, while most of the remaining cases related to cultivation and importation.

The decline in crime is partly attributed to the ongoing Operation Sasamaki, initiated in March, which aims to combat drug-related crimes more rigorously. This proactive operation has not only contributed to the fall in illicit drug cases but has also highlighted the role of community engagement in crime prevention efforts. The police force’s focus on collaboration with the public offers promising pathways toward improved public safety in Fiji.

While these statistics provide an optimistic outlook, police officials remain vigilant over persistent issues, particularly concerning domestic violence and assaults. Nonetheless, the overall drop in crime rates serves as a testament to the effectiveness of law enforcement strategies and the importance of community support. The Fiji Police Force’s commitment to transparency will further encourage public involvement in crime prevention initiatives, promising a safer future for residents.
