Fiji has made an appeal to Australia and New Zealand for marine resources that would aid in the transportation of its personnel to Vanuatu. This request was announced by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during a media conference held yesterday.
Prime Minister Rabuka indicated that Fiji is coordinating their response through various channels, including the Ministry of Regional Development and Disaster Management, as well as the army and police forces. He also expressed Fiji’s intention to assist Vanuatu in light of the recent natural disaster.
“We are currently in touch with the Prime Minister of Vanuatu and have communicated our readiness to offer assistance,” Rabuka stated. Due to the runway being out of commission at the Vanuatu airport, the deployment of troops and personnel will need to be conducted via marine avenues, such as by boat or landing craft, with staging likely taking place on the island of Santo.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Rabuka also expressed his condolences to those affected by the recent 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu.
This proactive approach not only exemplifies Fiji’s commitment to regional solidarity in times of crisis but also highlights the importance of international cooperation in disaster response. With assistance from Australia and New Zealand, there is hope for a swift and effective response to aid Vanuatu’s recovery efforts.
