The Ministry of Fisheries has announced a call for expressions of interest from registered and reputable companies seeking to obtain approval for the export of sea cucumber. This initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure sustainable management and regulation of the sector.

In a recent statement, the ministry outlined that companies interested in this opportunity must submit comprehensive proposals that address a variety of key requirements. These include a cover letter expressing their intention, a detailed company profile highlighting past business activities, and evidence of compliance with necessary regulatory standards. Specifically, applicants must demonstrate their company registrations, share structures, and compliance with tax obligations from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) and the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF). Additionally, a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)-certified processing and export facility is mandatory.

Furthermore, interested parties are required to provide confirmation of an overseas buyer or demonstrate access to international markets. They must also show financial capabilities through recently audited financial statements and propose their methods for controlled harvesting and beche-de-mer (BDM) export.

The ministry emphasizes that proposals must explicitly identify the villages or communities from which sea cucumbers will be sourced, clearly outline funding arrangements, and include evidence of engagement with the communities involved in harvesting activities.

As part of its commitment to ensure responsible harvesting practices and to promote equitable participation of communities in the sea cucumber industry, the Ministry of Fisheries has stated that only complete submissions fulfilling all outlined requirements will be considered. This approach not only aims to preserve marine resources but also fosters a collaborative relationship between companies and local communities, paving the way for sustainable economic opportunities within the sector.
