Fiji Seeks New Police Chief Amidst Controversy

The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) will soon announce a vacancy for the role of Commissioner of Police. Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua confirmed that the COC is actively working on the search for a new leader for the Fiji Police Force.

“The COC is set to advertise the position shortly. We hope to see a good number of applicants once the advertisement is published, allowing us to appoint a permanent commissioner quickly,” stated Mr. Tikoduadua.

The need for a new commissioner arose following the resignation of Sitiveni Qiliho, who stepped down earlier this month while serving a two-year prison sentence after being suspended on January 27.

Currently, the role is being filled by Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew as the COC moves forward in its search for a new appointee.

The COC functions as an advisory entity that offers recommendations to the President of Fiji regarding the appointment of significant public positions, including that of the Commissioner of Police. The commission comprises six members, including the Prime Minister as chairperson, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Attorney-General, with two additional members appointed by the Prime Minister and one by the Opposition Leader.
