Fiji is seeking assistance from Australia and New Zealand in providing marine resources to help mobilize its personnel for a deployment to Vanuatu. During a media conference, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted ongoing communications with both nations, emphasizing collaboration through Fiji’s Ministry of Regional Development and Disaster Management, as well as coordination with the army and police.

Rabuka mentioned that they have reached out to Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, expressing Fiji’s readiness to assist in light of the recent 7.3 magnitude earthquake that has severely impacted the region. Currently, Vanuatu’s airport runway is out of commission, necessitating that any troop deployment be conducted via the nearby island of Santo and then transported by boat or landing craft to the main island.

The Prime Minister expressed deep sympathy for the people of Vanuatu affected by the quake, showcasing Fiji’s solidarity in times of crisis.

This cooperative effort between Pacific nations underscores the strength of regional ties and a shared commitment to providing immediate assistance in emergencies. The collaboration could potentially set a precedent for future support and enhance disaster preparedness in the region, reflecting the strength of community and resilience among island nations.
