Fiji has sought assistance from Australia and New Zealand to secure marine resources needed for deploying personnel to Vanuatu. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka shared this update during a media conference, highlighting ongoing communications with regional partners.
Rabuka emphasized the coordination efforts involving the Ministry of Regional Development and Disaster Management, as well as collaboration with the army and police. He also informed that Vanuatu’s Prime Minister has been notified of Fiji’s readiness to provide support in light of the recent devastation caused by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake.
Currently, Vanuatu’s airport is out of commission, necessitating that any troop deployment or support be organized through other means, such as staging personnel in Santo and transferring them to the main area by marine vessels or landing crafts. Due to this logistical challenge, Fiji is specifically requesting help from Australia and New Zealand.
The Prime Minister also extended his heartfelt sympathies to those in Vanuatu affected by this natural disaster, underscoring the importance of solidarity in times of need.
