Fiji has sought assistance from Australia and New Zealand to acquire marine resources necessary for deploying personnel to Vanuatu. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this initiative during a media conference, emphasizing that they are actively communicating with their partners in response to the recent crisis in Vanuatu.
Rabuka explained that discussions are being facilitated through Fiji’s Ministry of Regional Development and Disaster Management, as well as the country’s army and police forces. He also mentioned that they have reached out to Vanuatu’s Prime Minister to express Fiji’s readiness to provide assistance.
Currently, Vanuatu’s airport is non-functional due to the damage sustained from a recent 7.3 magnitude earthquake, making traditional air deployment of troops challenging. Therefore, any deployment will need to be organized via the island of Santo, with personnel transported by marine vessels or landing crafts.
In addition to logistical support, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed heartfelt sympathy for the people of Vanuatu who have been affected by the earthquake, highlighting a strong sense of solidarity among the Pacific nations.
Overall, this collaborative approach showcases the unity and support among Pacific nations during times of crisis, reflecting a spirit of friendship and commitment to helping neighbors in need.
