Fiji Seeks Contractor for Year-End Jetties Repairs in Major Maritime Infrastructure Push

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is actively seeking a contractor to repair jetties across Fiji, with an ambitious timeline to complete the renovations by the year’s end. This initiative was publicly announced by Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, during the recent World Maritime Day 2024 festivities held at Albert Park, Suva.

In his address, Minister Tuisawau underscored the pressing concern over the declining condition of Fiji’s maritime infrastructure, including jetties and certain port facilities. He highlighted the necessity for improvements to ensure passenger safety, comfort, and access to basic amenities at these critical locations. “The safety of passengers and the convenience of travel are matters I have raised,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to maintain high safety standards.

The FRA has the budget allocated for these renovations and is prioritizing the swift procurement of a contractor to expedite repairs. “I am insisting that this work should be completed within this year to avoid ongoing issues, as it is fundamentally the government’s responsibility,” Tuisawau remarked.

In addition, he acknowledged the challenges facing the infrastructure sector and advocated for enhanced collaboration with international development partners to address these urgent needs. His proactive stance aligns with previous discussions regarding infrastructure improvements in Fiji, which have included several high-value projects worth over $1.6 billion intended to bolster the country’s built environment and utilities.

This ongoing development reflects a broader commitment by the government to upgrade essential infrastructure, which plays a crucial role in fostering economic growth and improving living standards for Fijians. By investing in maritime and transport facilities, the government aims to enhance connectivity and safety, ultimately benefiting local communities and boosting tourism potential in the region.
