Police have submitted an investigation file regarding allegations of sedition involving former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former police commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the file was sent on January 7, 2026.

The ODPP acknowledged receiving the investigation file in February 2023, and after reviewing the evidence, it was sent back to the police with recommendations for further investigation. According to a statement from the ODPP, the file was returned on January 7, 2026, for additional analysis and advice, and it is currently under review as per standard procedures.

This inquiry was initiated after it was disclosed that Bainimarama and Qiliho allegedly attempted to instigate military intervention following the general elections in December 2022. Reports have indicated that both individuals called for a military presence in Suva while deliberations were ongoing between the People’s Alliance Party, the National Federation Party, and SODELPA to establish a coalition government.

The situation continues to develop as the ODPP reviews the case, which highlights the ongoing tension within Fiji’s political landscape. There is hope that a thorough investigation will provide clarity and contribute to the stability of the nation’s governance.
