Fiji will join the list of countries eligible for a Transit Visa waiver starting September 4, 2024, according to an announcement from Immigration New Zealand. This decision comes after the Cabinet of the New Zealand government approved the measure on July 24.

The waiver applies specifically to Fijians who are transiting through Auckland airport. Immigration New Zealand stated, “Fiji will be added to the Transit Visa waiver list from September 4, 2024. This change allows Fijian nationals to apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) instead of a Transit Visa, streamlining the application process.”

From this date, Fijian nationals can apply for an NZeTA for transit through New Zealand. Those who currently hold an approved Transit Visa will see it remain valid until its expiration date, even after the new waiver is in effect.

However, Fijian nationals traveling to or from Fiji via Wellington or Christchurch with Fiji Airways must still apply for a Visitor Visa since there are no transit facilities available at those airports. Additionally, Fijians planning to visit, study, or work in New Zealand will still need to secure the appropriate visa prior to traveling.
