Fiji has successfully secured a funding package of $US134.5 million (around $F307.7 million) from the Asian Development Bank to support the replacement of four crucial bridges on Viti Levu as part of the Critical Bridges Resilience Project. The package includes $US120 million ($F274.5 million) in concessional loans and $US14.5 million ($F33.2 million) in grants aimed at enhancing the resilience of infrastructure against climate change impacts.

During a statement, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the significance of this funding. He noted, “We are taking this loan to address urgent infrastructure needs and ensure our critical transport links remain resilient to extreme weather events.” Prasad highlighted that the upgrades are vital for improving connectivity and fostering long-term sustainable growth for Fiji.

The project will focus on the rehabilitation of the Lami, Medraukutu, Sabeto, and Viseisei bridges, all of which play an essential role in connecting communities, promoting trade, and boosting the tourism sector. This initiative aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan, which emphasizes the need for climate-resilient infrastructure and improved connectivity across the island.

The terms of the loan are favorable, featuring a 40-year repayment period and a 10-year grace period. This structure will afford the Fijian government the necessary flexibility to execute the project without imposing significant fiscal pressure.

This partnership between Fiji and the Asian Development Bank stands as a strong commitment to enhancing infrastructure and addressing the challenges posed by climate change, marking a promising step forward for the nation’s future.

In summary, this funding not only underlines the importance of resilient infrastructure in the face of climate change but also represents a positive advancement for Fiji’s economic growth and community connectivity. The outlook remains hopeful as this project prepares to lay a stronger foundation for a more sustainable future.
