The Fijian Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have formalized a Loan and Grant Agreement intended to enhance Fiji’s infrastructure as part of the Critical Bridges Project. This significant event took place at the Ministry of Finance in Suva, with notable figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Financial Minister Professor Biman Prasad, ADB Pacific Regional Director Aaron Battern, and acting CEO of Fiji Roads Authority Apisai Ketenilagi present at the signing.

The overall budget for this project amounts to approximately $US134.5 million (around $F307.7 million), which comprises a concessional loan of $US120 million (approximately $F274.5 million) and a grant of $US14.5 million (around $F33.2 million). Professor Prasad highlighted that this initiative aligns with the national development plan launched in September, focused on crucial infrastructure upgrades and maintenance of rural roads.

The Fiji Roads Authority has pinpointed four vital bridges for replacement, for which detailed engineering designs have already been prepared. The bridges slated for renewal include the Lami bridge at Suvavou, the Medraukutu bridge at the Lami Cement Factory, the Sabeto bridge at the Sabeto River, and the Viseisei bridge connecting Nadi and Lautoka.

Ketenilagi emphasized the project’s comprehensive approach, which incorporates considerations for climate change to foster transport infrastructure that is resilient and connected. The updates are projected to commence next year, with an expected completion timeframe of three years.

This initiative not only aims to improve essential transportation links within Fiji but also demonstrates the government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and adapting to climate change, offering a brighter future for local communities and promoting sustainable growth in the region.
