The Fijian Government has officially finalized a Loan and Grant Agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the Critical Bridges Project, an initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure across the nation. The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Finance in Suva, with key figures including Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad, ADB Pacific Regional Director Aaron Battern, and Fiji Roads Authority acting CEO Apisai Ketenilagi in attendance.

Professor Prasad announced that the total funding for the project amounts to approximately $134.5 million (around $F307.7 million). This figure includes a concessional loan of $120 million (approximately $F274.5 million) and a grant of $14.5 million (about $F33.2 million). He emphasized that this project is a significant component of Fiji’s National Development Plan for the next five years, launched in September.

The project will prioritize upgrading and maintaining crucial rural roads, with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) taking the lead on implementation with ADB’s backing. Four bridges identified for urgent replacement, along with their detailed engineering designs, include the Lami bridge at Suvavou, the Medraukutu bridge at the Lami Cement Factory, the Sabeto bridge at the Sabeto River, and the Viseisei bridge connecting Nadi and Lautoka.

Notably, the loan and grant agreement marks the first time that the Fijian Government has received infrastructure sector financing from the ADB on concessional terms. Ketenilagi highlighted the importance of adopting a holistic approach to the project, particularly in the context of climate change. The goal is to create climate-resilient transport infrastructure that enhances connectivity while minimizing long-term disruptions.

Execution of the project is scheduled to begin next year, with completion anticipated within three years. This investment not only aims to improve critical infrastructure but also reinforces the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in Fiji.

In summary, the agreement between Fiji and the ADB represents a significant step forward in addressing infrastructure needs in the country. It shows a proactive approach to building a resilient future through improved transport links and careful considerations of environmental impacts. This initiative embodies hope for better connectivity and enhanced community development in Fiji.
