Municipal councils throughout Fiji are set to receive advanced waste management equipment thanks to a new partnership with Japan. The Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has finalized an exchange of notes with the Japanese Government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, securing over $12 million in assistance for this vital initiative.
The funding will enable councils to acquire an extensive array of equipment, including dump trucks, compactor trucks, bulldozers, excavators, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, wood chippers, and ride-on mowers. Minister Nalumisa emphasized that this assistance comes at a crucial moment as urbanization drives an increase in waste volumes across the nation.
“Fiji is experiencing steady urban growth, and this support couldn’t have come at a better time, as waste volumes are increasing, and communities are demanding cleaner and healthier living environments,” Nalumisa stated.
The Minister also noted that this exchange of notes underscores the strong and trusted relationship between Fiji and Japan. He emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader national vision aimed at establishing a modern and efficient waste management system throughout the country.
Nalumisa pointed out that several municipal councils have been using outdated equipment, which has negatively impacted their ability to deliver services effectively. The new machinery will address this issue, ensuring that councils can operate more efficiently. He acknowledged Japan’s ongoing support in the waste management sector, which has been consistent since 2011, highlighting the significance of this partnership in helping Fiji build a sustainable future.
