Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata has expressed his enthusiasm for the impressive competition observed during the opening round of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) season. The skill level, tactical execution, and rugby intelligence displayed by students from both the Southern and Western Zones underscore the successes of the development program initiated by the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL).
Since taking on the role of head coach at the FNRL, Kativerata has repeatedly stressed the importance of developing local talent and creating a clear pathway to the prestigious Fiji Bati jersey. Reflecting on the weekend’s developments at the FSSRL, the former Fiji Bati representative is optimistic about the future of rugby league in the region.
“The young kids in Fiji are starting to understand what rugby league is all about,” Kativerata remarked. He noted significant improvements since he first took on his position in 2023, highlighting how schoolteachers have become more effective in their roles as coaches for rugby league.
Kativerata was particularly impressed with the tactical detail and awareness exhibited by lower-grade teams. “This year is much better. Even at the under-15 level, they complete their sets, they know when to kick, when to attack, and when to hold on to the ball, all with a clear understanding of the zones they want to target,” he said.
Historically, Fiji’s rugby league talent has emerged primarily from players developed in the Australian system, who then progress to the NRL and go on to represent Fiji Bati. However, the ongoing development programs and the burgeoning FSSRL competition are now bringing forward potential Fiji Bati players from schools that have not traditionally been recognized as strongholds.
Institutions such as Naitasiri High School, Ra High School, and Ba Pro Institute are stepping up to reveal a wealth of talent eager to achieve greater honors. This trend is a testament to the reach and effectiveness of the FNRL’s development initiatives.
If this positive momentum continues, the island nation can expect to see more local talents advancing to the Kaiviti Silktails and the NRL, thus further enhancing the strength of the Fiji Bati team. This new generation of players could potentially create a brighter future for rugby league in Fiji, showcasing the remarkable potential from within the islands.
