Fiji Schools Set to Lift Weightlifting Futures

Discussions are underway to introduce weightlifting as part of school programs starting next year, as confirmed by Fiji Weightlifting president Della Shaw-Elder. She stated that the discussions are in the preliminary stages, and the initiative will initially focus on pilot schools to assess its viability.

Elder emphasized the importance of safely implementing this program, noting that it would involve strength and conditioning training. She expressed her enthusiasm about the prospect of integrating weightlifting into schools.

In 2019, a proposal was submitted to the government seeking the establishment of a high-performance center for athletes, and Elder mentioned receiving recent confirmation about the center’s location, awaiting final approval.

She believes that creating a weightlifting fitness center will significantly enhance the sport’s development in Fiji. Currently, the oldest athlete in their group is 26-year-old Taniela Rainibogi, with all others being younger, indicating a promising future for Fijian weightlifting.

Fiji recently achieved success at competitions, winning a youth bronze medal in the women’s 59kg category and another in the men’s 81kg category. Elder commented that this performance can serve as a benchmark as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games in 2026.

She noted that India has been a dominant force in the ongoing competition, encouraging Indo-Fijian families to support both male and female athletes who are excelling and winning medals. Elder invited the community to witness the sport of weightlifting firsthand. Fiji weightlifters will continue to compete over the next two days.
