Schools in Fiji are set to reopen tomorrow, except for those located in the Lau Group, which remain closed due to the extensive damage inflicted by Tropical Cyclone Rae. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro announced this decision following discussions with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO). Schools in the Northern, Lomaiviti, Western, and Central Divisions, along with those in Rotuma, will resume classes as originally planned.
The prolonged closure in the Lau Group results from widespread destruction to infrastructure, including essential roads, bridges, and school buildings, which hinders access for both students and teachers. Many schools in this area are currently functioning as evacuation centers for those affected by the cyclone.
Minister Radrodro has urged parents to assess local conditions and make informed choices about sending their children to school, especially in regions still experiencing flooding or other hazards. He highlighted the necessity for open communication between school leaders and management committees to ensure everyone is informed about the situation.
The Ministry of Education is closely monitoring developments and will issue further guidance as necessary, prioritizing the health and safety of students. Community support and cooperation are vital during these challenging times, and there remains optimism that families will overcome these difficulties and soon return to a sense of normalcy in education.
This proactive strategy underscores the government’s dedication to student safety, mirroring the resilience shown during similar weather-related crises in the past. With the right support and communication, Fiji can look forward to rebuilding and restoring educational stability.
