Fiji Schools May Embrace Weightlifting: A New Era Begins!

Discussions are underway to potentially introduce weightlifting in schools starting next year, as confirmed by Fiji Weightlifting president Della Shaw-Elder. She mentioned that the initiative is in its early stages, with plans to begin with a few pilot schools before expanding further.

Elder emphasized the importance of implementing this program safely, considering the aspects of strength and conditioning involved. She expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting that they had previously proposed a high-performance center to the government in 2019. Recently, they received confirmation regarding the location of this center, pending final approval.

The establishment of a weightlifting fitness center is expected to elevate the sport’s profile in Fiji. Elder highlighted the promising potential in their athlete group, where the eldest member, Taniela Rainibogi, is 26 years old, with all other athletes being younger.

Fiji’s performance in competitions has also been noteworthy, with the country winning a youth bronze medal in the women’s 59kg and men’s 81kg categories. Elder stated that these results will aid in their preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2026, noting India’s strong performance in the event.

She encouraged the Indo-Fijian community to come out and support the weightlifting athletes, who are achieving impressive results. The Fiji weightlifters are scheduled to compete for the next two days.
